Broadcast solely online, EVE TV is a weekly, on-demand video channel dedicated to the sci-fi, massively-multiplayer online game EVE Online. EVE TV was started by fans of EVE in June 2006 to provide live coverage of the 2nd Alliance Tournament being organised in Reykjavik, Iceland. In November 2006 the EVE TV crew re-assembled to provide highlights from EVE Fanfest, again from Iceland, before commencing work on the 3rd Alliance Tournament in December. Having had tens of thousands of EVE fans watching teams of ships battle for supremacy, it was decided to take EVE TV to the next level. In June 2007 EVE TV was re-launched as a weekly show and continues to provide free coverage of Alliance Tournaments.
Whilst live events are filmed from CCP HQ in Iceland, EVE TV's weekly show is currently filmed in West London, right next door to the world-famous Ealing Studios. Every week a small team of researchers scours the posts on the EVE forums, pokes around in-game, interviews players and developers, and tries to get a handle on what's going on, where, how and between whom. When news is out-of-game and there's a player gathering, the crew will bring their cameras along. Sometimes EVE's developers will even pay the studio a visit, some of whom are usually worth listening to :)
The EVE TV crew boasts a wealth of experience, not only as TV professionals, but as MMO gamers that have between them played almost every online game that's ever been made. More importantly the EVE crew have between them spent countless years in-game; as pirates, mercenaries, miners, industrialists and even as minor forum celebrities. Beyond the chemistry and charisma of hosts spiralJunkie and StevieSG, EVE TV can call upon the expert knowledge of countless EVE players who have dabbled in every aspect of the game. Pulling the whole operation together is EVE TV's producer and director Xyliana.
EVE Online is one of the most dynamic, complex and rewarding games ever devised. Other games may boast millions of subscribers, but very few have 150,000 interacting in the same universe. Combine this with a harsh PvP-focused environment, a rich back story and a system that means players don't have to be online 24/7 hunting small rodent-like creatures and it's easy to see why EVE Online has won awards year after year. Unfortunately making EVE TV means the crew have to stop playing the game occasionally - but they can't have everything.
